Based on the collaboration between <span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\"><a style=\"color: #ffcc00;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.telice.es\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Telice<\/a><\/span> and the <span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\"><a style=\"color: #ffcc00;\" href=\"https:\/\/robotica.unileon.es\/index.php?title=Home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robotics Group<\/a><\/span> of the <span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\"><a style=\"color: #ffcc00;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unileon.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Le\u00f3n<\/a><\/span>, a new method that allows one to check the state (height and stagger) of contact and messenger wires in overhead lines was presented.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3020\" src=\"http:\/\/tcat.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/telice_unileon_robotica.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"674\" height=\"110\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tcat.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/telice_unileon_robotica-200x33.png 200w, https:\/\/tcat.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/telice_unileon_robotica-300x49.png 300w, https:\/\/tcat.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/telice_unileon_robotica-400x65.png 400w, https:\/\/tcat.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/telice_unileon_robotica-600x98.png 600w, https:\/\/tcat.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/telice_unileon_robotica-669x110.png 669w, https:\/\/tcat.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/telice_unileon_robotica.png 674w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 674px) 100vw, 674px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The assembly and maintenance of electrified railway systems is of vital importance for its correct operation. Contact wires are critical elements since the correct collection of energy from trains through pantographs depends on them. Periodical inspection of the state of these installations is essential. This task traditionally implies a heavy manual workload subject to errors.<\/p>\n<p>The maintenance task is normally performed by workers using manual inspection methods, both direct inspection (in assembly phase, as shown in (a) of figure below) and indirect inspection (with laser rangefinders, as shown in (b) of figure below). However, the acquisition of these vehicles implies large purchases and operating costs. They are only functional in long sections (complete line or corridor) and within the framework of maintenance planned by the manager of the infrastructure (often once or twice a year). In addition, the huge amount of data generated makes its management hard.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the scope of these systems is limited, making it unsuitable for the daily quality control of a project or as a diagnostic tool for urgent and unexpected problems, fields in which manually operated equipment that makes use of new measurement technologies \u2013like the tCat\u2013 are clearly better positioned.<\/p>\n<p>tCat uses LiDAR (Laser imaging Detection And Ranging)\u00a0technology, which is positioned as one of the most widely used technologies for capturing data in railway environments, since it allows capturing large amounts of data in a short period of time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3022\" src=\"http:\/\/tcat.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/tCat_OLE-mobile-mapping-measuring.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1193\" height=\"687\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tcat.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/tCat_OLE-mobile-mapping-measuring-200x115.png 200w, https:\/\/tcat.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/tCat_OLE-mobile-mapping-measuring-300x173.png 300w, https:\/\/tcat.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/tCat_OLE-mobile-mapping-measuring-400x230.png 400w, https:\/\/tcat.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/tCat_OLE-mobile-mapping-measuring-600x346.png 600w, https:\/\/tcat.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/tCat_OLE-mobile-mapping-measuring-768x442.png 768w, https:\/\/tcat.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/tCat_OLE-mobile-mapping-measuring-800x461.png 800w, https:\/\/tcat.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/tCat_OLE-mobile-mapping-measuring-1024x590.png 1024w, https:\/\/tcat.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/tCat_OLE-mobile-mapping-measuring.png 1193w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1193px) 100vw, 1193px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\"><a style=\"color: #ffcc00;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tcat.es\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tCat<\/a><\/span> can be used both in assembly and maintenance phases, as well as afterwards, allowing the analysis of point clouds previously recorded. The new method proposed in the article was evaluated in both test bench and real environments against the commonly used measurement method.
